Primeira Aula

Nossa primeira aula foi no dia 10 de agosto. Os participantes do curso receberam várias informações sobre o funcionamento do curso e as tarefas de cada um. Uma das tarefas do curso é a leitura dos textos teóricos que irão embasar a prática dos participantes. Cada participante deve ler os textos sugeridos e responder às perguntas propostas:

Text 1: Spradley, J. P. Ethnography and culture (Chapter 1). Participant observation. Thomson Learning. 1980.

1. Why is it important to set aside naive realism in order to do enthographic research?
2. What are the fundamental aspects of human experience that must be considered by ethnographers?
3. How does the author define culture? Discuss with your partners how you understand Figure 1 (page 8).
4. Why is "meaning" so important in the symbolic interactionism theory?

1. Discuss with your partners the following excerpt "whenever people learn a culture, they are to some extent imprisoned without knowing it." (Spradley, 1980 p. 14)
2. Why could ethnography shed a different light in educational failure of many American children in the 60s?
3. Discuss with your partners the following excerpt "cultural descriptions can be used to oppress people or to set them free." (Spradley, 1980 p. 17)
4. How should ethnographers treat informants?

Text 3: Fetterman, D. M. A wilderness guide: Methods an techniques (Chapter 3). Ethnography: Step by Step. Thousand Oaks: Sage. 1998. p. 31-62.

1. Why should an ethnographer use a variety of methods and techniques?
2. What is participant observation?
3. “The interview is the ethnographer’s most important data gathering technique” (p. 37). What are the types of interview? How are they different?
4. Why do ethnographers often time concentrate on 1 or 2 key actors and in which way their life histories can be useful in the research?
5. Which technique do you think will work better in your research: list/form, questionnaire, interview, written and electronic information, or the analysis of proxemics and kinesics?
